I love to visit thrift stores, tag sales, and antique shops because you never know what you'll find. The ultimate thrill for me is to discover that box of stuff marked, 'All $1', I thoroughly enjoy digging deep down inside the box to find a menagerie of treasures, such as sewing notions, patterns, buttons (especially the ones that don't have a match) and oddments of ribbons, fabrics, and threads. From this one box comes a plethera of ideas and endless possibilities. I am not sure what it is about old stuff that I like so much and find intriguing. It could be that it survived the decades of household purging or that it existed throughout an era free of cell phones and tivo. I often wonder what life was like back then. Simple, I am sure!
I love to make things, whether it's sewing, smocking, knitting or crochet and even baking in the kitchen and find the greatest pleasure in making something. I've been making 'stuff' since I can remember. When I was very young, I made dolls and then made clothes for my dolls. Throughout my school years, I made my own 'back to school' wardrobe. Now a mother of 2, I enjoy the simplier things in life, such as knititng for my children. I am blessed with one of each so my options are endless. For inspiration, I refer back to my treasures. Sometimes, it works out beautifully and sometimes it doesn't.
To preserve these knitted heirlooms so that I can share them with you, I started Heirloom Stitches. As my children grow and their styles change, so will this collection. I hope you will find a design appropriate for that little one in your life and knit an Heirloom today!
